This heat-loving heirloom dates back to the 1700s. It is said that Thomas Jefferson. The story goes, Jefferson sent the seeds of this variety to Samuel Vaughan Jr and he had mentioned it was a melon that tasted like sweet potato, so it was termed the Upper ground Sweet potato squash, or "above ground " sweet potato squash.

This squash does extremely well in hot drier weather. The vines are extremely thick and the leaves are of the more beautiful summer squash leaves. The leaves are dark with a majestic silver pattern on them.

This is a great squash to grow as it's drought-tolerant, downy mildew resistant loves the heat, and it produces numerous 20-23 pound fruits. The squash will vary in shape from round to bell-shaped.
