A cob of Bloody Butcher corn.

Bloody Butcher's Dent Corn seeds

SKU: Q431408

The name "Bloody Butcher" comes from how this heirloom variety grows. When young, the kernels are extremely pale, almost white. As the corn grows and matures, the tops of the kernels begin to turn a deep red color. So when you look at a butcher's white apron, it would have blood on it in varying shades of red, hence the name bloody butcher corn.

We've grown this for the past 4 years and if you pick it midway, you will see the kernels transition from deep red down to pale yellow as it gets closer to the cob.

This corn has a few uses. When picked young, it is edible and semi-sweet. Once the cobs have matured and dried, they excel as ornamental decorations. If you chose to, you could also pop the dried kernels for your heirloom popcorn or you could grind them into cornmeal.

These get very tall. 8-10 feet. We grew these in a row as a natural privacy fence this past Summer worked like a charm! Each cob will produce 3 - 6 cobs.
