Christmas Bean seeds
Don't let the name fool you, these guys love the warm weather! Christmas beans are an older heirloom that dates back to the 1800s in Peru. There are many versions of how they got their name, some include their maroon and cream-colored beans with the green pod creating a Christmas theme, or the fact that they taste similar to buttery chestnuts. These are lima-type bean that lends themselves well to soups and stews, but will also excel as a side dish. Equally, these can be dried and made into lima bean flour and used to prepare healthier versions of your favorite foods. They're exceptionally meaty with a flaky texture and very filling on account of their high fiber content. Fresh beans will be a vibrant red and white but retire to cream and maroon color when dried.
Like all beans, Christmas beans pull triple duty as they bear fruit but also add stunning blossoms and are a natural nitrogen fixer for your soil. These are also pole-type beans which means they love to climb. Their vines can reach upwards of 12-15 feet. These will grow in a container, but you will need to provide a tall bamboo teepee or grow them somewhere where you can use landscape stakes and string to tie them upwards (i.e., under a roof/rain gutter, pergola, etc.). This variety produces exceptional yields.
