Clusters of Canadian Buffalo Berries growing on their shrub.

Canadian Buffalo Berry seeds

SKU: 2768457

Enhance your landscape with the Canadian Buffalo Berry, a hardy and ecologically vital shrub native to the North American wilderness. Reaching heights of 3 to 13 feet, this resilient nitrogen-fixer thrives in poor, rocky, or sandy soils where other plants struggle, making it an ideal choice for erosion control and land reclamation. Its unique, leathery leaves—dark green on top with a shimmering, rusty-silver underside—provide year-round visual interest and a beautiful contrast in any garden. In late summer, the plant produces translucent, bright red berries that are a magnet for wildlife, including songbirds and bears.

While the berries are famously bitter due to natural saponins, they have a rich cultural history and can be whipped into a frothy, foam-like treat known as "Indian ice cream" when sweetened. Because this species is dioecious, we recommend planting both male and female shrubs to ensure a successful berry harvest. Cold-hardy down to Zone 2 and incredibly drought-tolerant once established, the Canadian Buffalo Berry is the perfect low-maintenance "workhorse" for sustainable and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
