The Bushel Gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is a massive, vigorous vining plant prized by gardeners for producing giant, round, hard-shelled fruits. True to its name, this heirloom variety grows large enough to rival the volume of a traditional bushel basket. While average mature specimens typically measure between 12 to 18 inches in diameter and weigh anywhere from 30 to 60 pounds, exceptional plants grown in rich soil with plenty of room can stretch up to 3 feet across and tip the scales at an astonishing 100 pounds. Once harvested and properly cured, their thick, durable wooden shells have historically been used to craft heavy-duty storage containers, baskets, and bowls.
